K'taka Rape (File)
Seven Men accused in the January 2024 Hanagal gang-rape case in Karnataka’s Haveri district sparked nationwide outrage by celebrating their release on bail with a brazen victory parade. The accused, released from Haveri sub-jail after the survivor failed to identify them in court, paraded through Akki Alur town in a convoy of cars and motorbikes, flashing victory signs and chanting slogans. Videos of the procession, widely shared on social media, have fueled public anger, with many calling it a mockery of justice.
The Hanagal Case Unraveled
The case stems from a horrific incident where a 26-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped after being dragged from a hotel room in Hanagal, initially targeted for “moral policing” due to her interfaith relationship. The seven primary accused—Aftab Chandanakatti, Madar Saab Mandakki, Samiwulla Lalanavar, Mohammad Sadiq Agasimani, Shoib Mulla, Tausif Choti, and Riyaz Savikeri—were among 19 arrested. Despite a robust chargesheet with DNA evidence and witness statements, the survivor’s inability to confirm identities in court led to their bail, weakening the case.
Public and Political Backlash
The celebratory roadshow, complete with music and supporters, has drawn sharp condemnation. Former Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai criticized the Congress-led state government’s handling, while women’s rights activists and netizens on X labeled the display “disgusting.” The silence from state leadership has further intensified public frustration.
A Call for Justice
The incident has reignited debates about survivor protection and judicial accountability. Activists demand stricter oversight to prevent such brazen displays, arguing they intimidate victims and erode trust in the system. As authorities verify the viral videos for potential suo moto action, the nation watches, hoping for justice to prevail in this deeply unsettling case.
